Rich sounds from the Mandingue griot tradition. Stunning vocals, deft percussion, balafon and kora.
The Mandingue peoples, descendants of the founders of the ancient Mandingue empire (c. 100-1400), whose rule was the most magnificent and sophisticated in the history of Western Africa, are still in Mali and Guinea. Western Africa was dominated by the Mandingue for over six centuries. To this today their influence can be felt in the contemporary music of Senegal, Mali, the Ivory Coast, Guinea and Burkina Faso.
This CD features female voices (of great presence without overpowering the others), accompanied by a traditional African orchestra of balafons, koras, diverse drums, metal percussions and rattles.
In their original setting, these songs and sounds (completed, of course, by dance, an essential part of African songs and music) are a vital part of ceremonial events and the community life. They are part of celebrations following the farming calendar, initiation rites, weddings and funerals.
The record also includes songs once performed at the courts of nobles, heard today at celebrations for village headmen and nobles.
The instrumental formation of the ensemble includes West Africa's most defining instruments in the hands of true masters. The all-women vocal part of the group are two renowned griotte singers.
